Planning your Camino in La Rioja
How can a private transfer help on the French Way?
Quick answer: On the Camino Francés through La Rioja we drive pilgrims from the airport to their starting town, skip a stage when feet or schedules need it, collect walkers at intermediate villages and move backpacks between overnight stops. Every quote is a fixed price per vehicle, and we serve pilgrims in English and Spanish.
The French Way enters La Rioja just after Viana and crosses the region from east to west, through Logroño, Navarrete, Nájera and Santo Domingo de la Calzada, before reaching Grañón and the border with Castilla y León. It is a beautiful stretch of vineyards and red earth, but it also includes long, exposed sections where blisters, heat or a tight return flight can change your plans.
What are the Camino stages in La Rioja?
Many guidebooks split the region into the stages below. Walking distances are approximate and vary between guides; drive times are what we would expect on the road between the same towns, depending on traffic.
| Stage | Approx. walking distance | Approx. drive time | Notes for pilgrims |
|---|---|---|---|
| Viana → Logroño | ~10 km | ~15 min | Short day; arrive early and enjoy the old town and its tapas streets |
| Logroño → Nájera | ~29 km | ~25 min | A long stage via Navarrete; a common point for a partial skip |
| Nájera → Santo Domingo de la Calzada | ~21 km | ~20 min | Rolling vineyard country through Azofra; little shade in summer |
| Santo Domingo → Belorado | ~23 km | ~25 min | Leaves La Rioja after Grañón and enters the province of Burgos |
When does a stage skip make sense?
Pilgrims usually ask us for a skip for three reasons: an injury that needs a rest day, a heatwave that makes a long exposed section risky, or a fixed flight home that leaves no room for the full distance. We can pick you up wherever you stop, for example in Navarrete or Azofra, and drop you at your next accommodation or the start of the following stage.
Which airport should pilgrims fly into?
If you are starting in Logroño, Bilbao and Pamplona are the most practical gateways. Our airport transfer guide for La Rioja compares journey times from all seven airports we serve. Tell us which town you want to start from and we will quote the drive directly to your first albergue or hotel.
How does backpack transfer work?
- Tell us where you are sleeping each night and how many bags need moving.
- Leave your backpack ready at the agreed time and place in the morning.
- We take it by road to your next accommodation.
- You walk with just a day pack, water and essentials.
Pilgrims with mobility concerns or a heavy camera bag find this especially useful on the longer stages towards Nájera and Santo Domingo.
Walking as a group?
Clubs, parishes and groups of friends often travel together but walk at different speeds. Our 7-seat Rioja Group van can carry the whole party and its luggage to the start, or collect those who need a break while the rest carry on. Smaller parties of one to four pilgrims usually travel with the Rioja Standard service, which keeps the price lower for short hops between Camino towns.
Can you collect us at the end of a stage?
Yes. Some pilgrims prefer to sleep in Logroño for several nights and walk each stage with a light pack, returning by car every afternoon. We agree a meeting point in the village where you finish, usually a church square or a bar on the main street, and drive you back to your hotel.
Tips for international pilgrims
- Book at least 24 hours ahead when you can; last-minute requests depend on availability.
- Save our WhatsApp number on your phone before you leave home.
- Share your accommodation addresses in advance, as some albergues are hard to find by GPS.
- Carry a printed or offline copy of your booking confirmation.
If you finish your Camino in La Rioja, or need to leave the route early, we can also drive you back to an airport or to Logroño station for your onward train.
