Nájera on the Camino:
arrive, rest and carry on
Quick answer
Nájera is about 28 km by road from Logroño (around 25 minutes) and roughly 1 h 20 from Bilbao airport. It is where the longest stage of the Rioja Camino ends. We pick you up at the airport, at Logroño station or at your albergue by the Najerilla, and take you to Azofra, Santo Domingo or back home.
Nájera has something that sets it apart from the other Rioja stops: pilgrims arrive tired after some 29 km from Logroño and find a town split by the river Najerilla, its old quarter tucked beneath a cliff of reddish sandstone riddled with caves. It is a good place to sleep, to take a rest day or, if your body asks for it, to cover the next day's walk by car.
How do you get to Nájera to start or resume the Camino?
| From | Approx. time by road | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Bilbao airport | ~1 h 20 | The most convenient flight connection. Details and fixed price on our Bilbao airport to Nájera transfer |
| Vitoria airport | ~1 h | An alternative with fewer flights, via Haro or Logroño depending on traffic |
| Logroño train station | ~25-30 min | For those arriving by train from Madrid, Barcelona or Zaragoza |
| Logroño-Agoncillo airport | ~35-40 min | Few routes; only useful if your flight fits |
| Logroño city centre | ~25 min | If you slept in Logroño and want to start walking in Nájera |
Where do we pick up pilgrims in Nájera?
- Around Plaza de Santa María: next to the monastery, where the pilgrim accommodation of the old quarter is clustered.
- The banks of the Najerilla: the riverside walk and the bridge by which the Camino enters town; an easy spot to meet your driver.
- Hotels and rural guesthouses in the newer part of town: across the river, with easier access by car.
- The way out towards Azofra: if you have already started walking and need us to collect you along the route, send us your location on WhatsApp.
What to see in Nájera if you take a rest day
The big reason to stay is the Monastery of Santa María la Real, burial place of the kings of Navarre, with its Knights' Cloister and the cave where, according to tradition, the image of the Virgin that gave rise to the church was found. Close by is the red cliff with its carved-out caves and views over the river. Visiting hours change with the season, so check the official website before you go.
About 20 minutes away by car are the monasteries of Yuso and Suso in San Millán de la Cogolla, a detour many pilgrims have on their list but which lies off the route on foot. We organise it as a half-day excursion with the outward journey, waiting time and return to your albergue; the visit to Suso must be booked in advance. If you are interested, ask our private driver in Nájera service when you book.
