Why send your backpack ahead on the Rioja Camino

Walk without the weight
on the Camino de Santiago

The Logroño–Nájera stage (29km) and the Nájera–Santo Domingo stage (21km) are two of the longest on the Camino Francés in La Rioja. Doing them with a 10-12kg pack on your back under the Rioja sun is a real effort. Without it, the same stages are a completely different experience.

Rioja Transfer's backpack transport service is especially popular with first-time pilgrims, older pilgrims and those with injuries who don't want to give up because of the weight of their luggage.

Practical guide to the service

Camino de Santiago luggage transfer:
how it works in La Rioja

Quick answer

Camino de Santiago luggage transfer works like this: you leave your labelled backpack at your albergue reception first thing in the morning, we collect it and deliver it to the place where you are sleeping that night, usually before you arrive. In La Rioja we do this between Logroño, Navarrete, Nájera, Azofra and Santo Domingo de la Calzada, at a fixed price.

It is the service that raises the most questions among pilgrims passing through La Rioja, especially first-timers and those nursing an ache picked up in Navarre. Here you have all the practical details in one place: what you need to do, what we do, which sections we cover and what to check before leaving your backpack at reception.

How does backpack transport work, step by step?

WhenWhat you doWhat we do
The evening beforeMessage us on WhatsApp with your departure albergue, your destination accommodation, the date and how many backpacks there are.We confirm availability, the pick-up time and the fixed price per backpack and stage.
Before bedPrepare the label: name, mobile number, date and the name of your destination accommodation with the town.We let you know if the albergue has a specific spot for leaving luggage.
In the morningLeave your backpack closed, with the label firmly attached, at reception or wherever the albergue indicates before you set off walking. We come by first thing, at the approximate time agreed when you booked, and load it with the other backpacks on the route.
During the stageYou walk with just a small daypack: water, sun cream, rain jacket, documents and your credencial (pilgrim passport). We take your backpack by road to the destination town.
On arrivalAsk for your backpack at the reception of your accommodation. We will have left it there, usually before you arrive. If anything goes wrong, we will call you.

Pick-up and delivery times are approximate: they depend on the number of backpacks that day, the section and each accommodation's opening hours. We confirm the exact time when you book.

If you want to combine backpack and car on the same day —for example, walk to Azofra and have us pick you up there with all your luggage— we arrange it as a Camino stage transfer. And if you are flying in, on day one we can collect you and your backpack at the airport and drop you at your albergue in Logroño to start the Camino.

Before you leave your backpack: five checks

  1. Make sure your destination accommodation accepts luggage. Some public albergues will not store backpacks that arrive without their pilgrim, or do not take bookings. Private albergues, guesthouses and hotels usually accept them without any problem.
  2. Write the full destination on the label. Name of the accommodation and town; just "Nájera" is not enough on busy days.
  3. Don't pack anything you need during the stage. Medication, documents, money, phone and credencial go with you, in your daypack.
  4. Close it properly. Walking poles, sandals or sleeping mats hanging loose on the outside get snagged and lost; better inside or tightly strapped.
  5. Let us know if your plans change. If you decide to stay in a different town, message us as soon as possible so we can redirect the delivery.

Who does it make most sense for?

It is often requested by pilgrims on a tight schedule who cannot afford an injury, older walkers or those with knee or back trouble, and groups who want to keep everyone at the same pace without anyone carrying too much. Also by anyone who just wants a lighter load on one particular day: the Logroño–Nájera stage, at around 29 km, is where walking without weight is most appreciated. If there are several of you, we can carry the whole group's backpacks in the same service, and if you take a rest day in Nájera you can get around the area with our private driver in Nájera. You will find all the other options for pilgrims on our Camino de Santiago transfers in La Rioja page.

More questions about sending your backpack

Do I need to be there when you collect the backpack?

No. Just leave it labelled at reception, or wherever your albergue indicates, before the agreed time. You can head off walking with peace of mind.

Can I send a suitcase instead of a backpack?

Yes, as long as you tell us when you book. What matters is that it is closed and labelled with your name, phone number and destination accommodation.

Does it work if I am sleeping in a hotel or rural guesthouse off the Camino?

Yes. Give us the address of your destination accommodation and we will take it into account when confirming the service and the fixed price.

What happens if my destination albergue is closed when you arrive?

We check this when you book: if the accommodation doesn't open until later, we adjust the delivery or work out an alternative with you so your backpack is left somewhere safe.

Can I book backpack transport for just one day?

Yes. You can book it for a single stage, for example Logroño to Nájera, or for the whole Rioja section of the Camino.
