Why pilgrims choose Rioja Transfer for the Camino
The stage transfer
that doesn't spoil your Camino
Skipping a stage doesn't mean giving up. Sometimes a blister, tendinitis or simply accumulated tiredness means taking the car instead of walking. The difference is doing it properly: with a driver who knows the Camino, picks you up at the door of your albergue and drops you at the door of the next one.
Rioja Transfer is the trusted Camino stage transfer service in La Rioja. Waqar Asghar, founder and regular driver, knows the Camino Francés inside out and personally looks after pilgrims, in English and Spanish. See all our Camino de Santiago transfers in La Rioja.

When and how to skip a stage
of the Camino Francés in La Rioja
Quick answer
A stage skip on the Camino Francés in La Rioja is a private car transfer from one town on the route to another: we pick you up at your albergue, or wherever you have stopped along the way, and drop you at your next accommodation. The most requested are Logroño–Nájera and Nájera–Santo Domingo, at a fixed price and with a driver who knows the route.
Hardly any pilgrim plans to skip a stage, but it happens more often than you might think. In La Rioja three things play a part: the Logroño–Nájera day is one of the long ones on the Camino Francés, between Navarrete and Santo Domingo there are many kilometres of vineyards and wheat fields with no shade, and anyone coming from Roncesvalles arrives with a week's walking in their legs. This section helps you decide which kind of transfer you need.
Which transfer suits you, depending on what's happening?
| Situation | What usually works best | Example in La Rioja |
|---|---|---|
| Minor aches or blisters | Partial skip: you walk part of the way and we pick you up in a town along the route | Walk Logroño–Navarrete and let us drive you from Navarrete to Nájera |
| An injury that needs rest | Full skip plus one or two rest days in the same town | Transfer to Nájera or Santo Domingo and a pause before carrying on |
| Short on days | Skip one or two stages in one go | Logroño → Santo Domingo de la Calzada, around 40 minutes by car |
| Heatwave or storm | Set off walking early and get picked up mid-morning | Pick-up in Azofra so you don't walk the final stretch to Santo Domingo in the full sun |
| A group walking at different paces | Part of the group walks and the rest go by car with the backpacks | Meet up again at the destination albergue with the van |
| You have to leave the Camino | Direct transfer to the airport or station | From any Rioja town to Bilbao or Logroño station |
Pick-ups along the route: how do we find you if you're already walking?
You don't need to be at an albergue. If you decide to stop halfway through a stage, send us your location on WhatsApp and we will tell you the nearest point the car can reach. On the Rioja section the easiest places to meet are the villages themselves —Navarrete, Ventosa, Nájera, Azofra, Cirueña— and the points where the Camino crosses local roads. On tracks between vineyards the driver can't get everywhere: it is better to walk a few minutes to the village or crossing we suggest.
- Message us on +34 603 27 63 98 with your live location and how many of you there are.
- We confirm the meeting point, estimated arrival time and fixed price.
- We wait for you there and take you to your destination albergue or wherever you prefer.
Does skipping a stage in La Rioja affect your Compostela?
No. To earn the Compostela you need to walk at least the last 100 km to Santiago, so a skip in La Rioja won't cost you it. You should, however, keep getting your credencial (pilgrim passport) stamped in the towns you pass through or sleep in.
Popular combinations
- Skip + rest day in Nájera: we drop you by the Najerilla and the next day you carry on walking towards Azofra. Details about the town on our Camino transfer in Nájera page.
- Skip to Santo Domingo and carry on through Castile: you reach the last big Rioja stop and from there you can continue on foot or jump ahead to Belorado. We explain it on our Camino transfer in Santo Domingo de la Calzada page.
- Pilgrim groups: up to 7 people with their backpacks in the Rioja Group van, at a single fixed price per vehicle.
And if what you want is to keep walking but without the weight, the service you're looking for is our Camino backpack transport. All the options for pilgrims are summarised on our Camino de Santiago transfers in La Rioja page.
Frequently asked questions
All about Camino stage transfers in La Rioja
How much does a Camino stage transfer in La Rioja cost? +
The price depends on the section and the number of pilgrims. Rioja Transfer works with a fixed price from the moment you book. Message us on WhatsApp at +34 603 276 398 with your section and we will reply with the price within minutes.
Can I book a stage transfer the same morning? +
Yes. You can book the night before or even the same morning, subject to availability. To be safe, especially in high season (May–October), we recommend booking a day in advance.
Do you carry the backpack as well as the pilgrim? +
Yes. On a stage transfer, your backpack travels with you in the car. If you want to walk the stage but send your backpack separately to the next albergue, see our dedicated Camino backpack transport service.
Do you do transfers to stages outside La Rioja, such as Burgos? +
Yes. Although our speciality is the Camino in La Rioja, we can do transfers to stages in Castile if a pilgrim needs it — such as Santo Domingo to Belorado or even to Burgos. Ask about availability and price.
Does the driver speak English? +
Yes. Waqar Asghar, Rioja Transfer's regular driver, speaks fluent Spanish and English. Ideal for international pilgrims on the Camino Francés who need support in English during the transfer.
Can you transfer a whole group of pilgrims? +
Yes. For groups of up to 7 pilgrims we have the Rioja Group van. It is the most economical option for groups who need to skip the same stage. Fixed price per vehicle, not per person.
