Santo Domingo de la Calzada on the Camino Francés

The last stage of the Camino
in La Rioja

Santo Domingo de la Calzada closes the Rioja section of the Camino Francés with one of its most iconic stops. The town takes its name from the hermit Domingo García, who in the 11th century built roads, bridges and hospitals to help pilgrims on their way. Its cathedral — home to a live rooster and hen in honour of a Camino miracle — is one of the most famous sights on the Way.

Santo Domingo de la Calzada for pilgrims

Santo Domingo de la Calzada:
end of the Rioja section and gateway to Castile

Quick answer

Santo Domingo de la Calzada is about 47 km from Logroño (around 40 minutes) and roughly 1 h 15 from Bilbao airport. It is the last major stop on the Camino Francés in La Rioja: from here we take you to the airport or the station if you are finishing, or on to Grañón, Belorado or Burgos if you are walking on through Castile.

For many pilgrims, Santo Domingo is a mental border: the vineyards end, the wheat fields begin and there are only a few kilometres left in La Rioja. That is why it is a common place to arrange trips home, to finish a section for those walking the Camino in stages, and to skip ahead to Burgos to gain a few days. It is also a good starting point if you only want to walk the Castilian part and would rather begin somewhere steeped in Camino history.

The saint's town: what not to miss

  • The cathedral and its Gothic henhouse: inside live a white rooster and hen in memory of the miracle of the hanged pilgrim, origin of the Spanish saying "Santo Domingo de la Calzada, where the hen crowed after being roasted".
  • The free-standing tower: separate from the church, it is the town's landmark, visible several kilometres before you arrive.
  • The Parador: it occupies the old pilgrims' hospital founded by the saint himself, opposite the cathedral.
  • The town walls and the bridge over the Oja: on the way out towards Grañón, the bridge recalls Domingo García's work to make the journey easier for walkers.

Opening times for the cathedral and museum change throughout the year; check the official website or ask at your accommodation before planning your visit.

Where do we pick you up in Santo Domingo de la Calzada?

  • Albergue de las Cistercienses: another classic option in the centre.
  • The Parador and the hotels on the cathedral square: direct access by car and easy for the driver to find.
  • The Camino exit towards Grañón: if you have already started walking and decide to stop, send us your location on WhatsApp.
