How to get to Logroño
to start the Camino de Santiago
Quick answer
To start the Camino de Santiago in Logroño, most pilgrims fly into Bilbao (around 1 h 30 by car), Vitoria or Pamplona (about 1 h). We wait for you in arrivals with flight tracking and drop you at your albergue or hotel in the Casco Antiguo (Old Town), just a few steps from Calle Ruavieja, the street the Camino follows out of the city.
Logroño is the first big city pilgrims reach on the Camino Francés after Pamplona, and a popular starting point for those arriving by plane. It has airports nearby, the train and bus stations in the same complex, and a compact old town where the Way of St James is clearly marked with scallop shells and yellow arrows. Here we explain how to get there, where we pick you up and what your options are if you need to move further along the Camino from Logroño.
Which airport is best for starting the Camino in Logroño?
| Airport | Approx. distance and time to Logroño | When it usually makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| Bilbao (BIO) | ~135 km · ~1 h 30 | The most common choice: plenty of European connections and frequent flights. Bilbao Airport to Logroño transfer |
| Vitoria (VIT) | ~90 km · ~1 h | Fewer flights, but very close. Vitoria Airport to Logroño transfer |
| Pamplona (PNA) | ~90 km · ~1 h | Handy if you are flying in from Madrid or want to start a few days earlier in Navarre. |
| Zaragoza (ZAZ) | ~170 km · ~1 h 45 | Some low-cost routes and a good motorway connection. |
| Madrid-Barajas (MAD) | ~330 km · ~3 h 30 | For long-haul flights: land and reach Logroño without any connections. |
| Logroño-Agoncillo | A few kilometres from the centre | Very few routes; check the airline's current schedule. |
If you arrive by train, we pick you up on the platform or at the station entrance: see our Logroño train station transfer. Distances and times are approximate and always depend on traffic.
Where do we pick you up in Logroño?
- Calle Ruavieja and around: several pilgrim albergues are concentrated here; it is the street the Camino follows through the city.
- Plaza de Santiago: next to the church of Santiago el Real and the Game of the Goose board painted on the ground, a must for photos.
- Puente de Piedra: the Camino's natural entrance from Navarre, useful if you are walking in from Viana and want us to collect you on arrival.
- Hotels in the centre and on Gran Vía: for those who prefer a more comfortable first night.
- Train and bus stations: in the same complex, a few minutes' drive from the Casco Antiguo.
A day in Logroño before you set off
If you arrive the evening before, it is worth keeping a few hours for the city: the Co-Cathedral of Santa María de la Redonda with its twin towers, the Pilgrims' Fountain, the old wine cellars (calados) of the Casco Antiguo and, after dark, the pinchos (tapas) of Calle Laurel. The next day the Camino heads west past La Grajera reservoir, a pleasant way to loosen up your legs.
From Logroño, how far by car are the next towns?
| Destination | By road (approx.) | Usual reason for the transfer |
|---|---|---|
| Navarrete | ~12 km · ~15 min | Starting with a shorter first day, or collecting someone who has run out of steam |
| Nájera | ~28 km · ~25 min | Skipping the long stage of about 29 km on foot |
| Azofra | ~35 km · ~30 min | Getting a day and a half ahead |
| Santo Domingo de la Calzada | ~47 km · ~40 min | Going straight to the end of the Rioja section |

Tips for pilgrims starting in Logroño
- Get your credencial (pilgrim passport) stamped on day one: there are several stamping points in the city, including albergues and churches in the Casco Antiguo.
- If your flight lands late, send us your flight number: we track your arrival in real time and a delay costs you nothing extra.
- In spring and autumn, book your first night well ahead; the albergues in the centre fill up quickly.
- If there are four or more of you with large backpacks, ask for the van: you travel together with room for all the luggage.
