Airports near Logroño: which one to fly into

Updated 20268 min readBy Rioja Transfer

Quick answer

Logroño has no commercial airport of its own. The closest are Vitoria and Pamplona (about 90 km, roughly an hour away), then Bilbao (about 135 km, 1 h 30), which has by far the best connections, and Zaragoza (about 1 h 45). Long-haul travellers usually land at Madrid-Barajas (about 3 h 30). Biarritz and Barcelona are fall-backs when the flight is right.

"Which airport should we book?" is usually the very first question people ask when planning La Rioja. The honest answer: it depends less on the map and more on which airline flies from your home city.

Below we line up the seven airports that realistically serve Logroño and the wine country around it, with approximate road distances, drive times and the type of traveller each one suits. Use it alongside your flight search rather than instead of it – schedules change from season to season, so the best choice in May may not be the best in November.

Times are by car in normal traffic and will vary with the hour, the weather and your exact address in La Rioja.

Bilbao: the default choice

For travellers from the UK, Ireland and most of Europe, Bilbao is the airport to beat. It handles a good spread of low-cost and full-service carriers – Vueling, Iberia and Ryanair among them – and the AP-68 motorway runs almost straight from the terminal to the Ebro valley. Haro, heart of the Rioja Alta wineries, is only about 1 h 15 away, and Logroño around 1 h 30. Our Bilbao Airport to Logroño transfer and Bilbao Airport to Haro transfer are the two routes we drive most.

The only catch is long-haul: if you are coming from outside Europe there may be no direct flight to Bilbao, which means connecting in Madrid, Barcelona or another hub.

Vitoria and Pamplona: small but close

Vitoria-Foronda

Many visitors overlook it, yet Vitoria is the same distance as Pamplona and ideally placed if you are staying in Laguardia, Elciego or Labastida. Flights are mostly domestic, so it suits people connecting within Spain. When the timings work, our Vitoria Airport to La Rioja transfer puts you at your hotel roughly an hour after landing.

Pamplona-Noáin

A compact terminal with short queues and a direct dual carriageway towards Logroño. It works well if your base is Calahorra, Arnedo or anywhere in the east of the region. Details on our Pamplona Airport to La Rioja transfer page.

Zaragoza: the southern alternative

At around 175 km, Zaragoza is a little further than Bilbao but still very manageable, and it can turn up cheaper or more convenient fares on certain routes. Its international network is limited – it is mainly a domestic and European low-cost airport – but it can shorten the final leg if you are heading for the Rioja Baja. Our Zaragoza Airport to Logroño transfer takes about 1 h 45.

Madrid-Barajas: the long-haul gateway

Madrid has the best intercontinental connections in Spain, with direct flights from North and South America, Asia and the whole of Europe. If nothing reaches Bilbao or Zaragoza from your city, Barajas may be your only realistic option. The trade-off is distance: about 330 km, or roughly 3 h 30 on the road. We cover the terminals, trains and transfer options in detail in Madrid-Barajas Airport to La Rioja.

Biarritz and Barcelona: when the flight decides

From France, and from some British cities, Biarritz can have better timings than Bilbao. The drive crosses the Basque Country and takes about two and a half hours; see the Biarritz Airport to La Rioja transfer. Barcelona is the furthest of all, but some long-haul passengers land at El Prat because it is their only non-stop flight. In that case a door-to-door Barcelona Airport to La Rioja transfer avoids juggling trains and connections with luggage; if you arrive exhausted, consider splitting the journey over two days.

The right airport for La Rioja is rarely the nearest one on the map – it is the one with the best flight from your home city.

Three questions to settle it

  • Where are you actually staying? For Haro or Rioja Alavesa, Bilbao and Vitoria are closest; for Calahorra or Arnedo, Pamplona and Zaragoza can trim the final stretch.
  • What time do you land? A bargain fare that arrives at midnight at a distant airport can cost you dearly in sleep. With a booked transfer the hour matters less: we follow your flight and wait in arrivals even if it is late.
  • How many of you are there? For six or seven people, the seven-seat van with driver makes even a more distant airport good value per head.

Connecting in Madrid or Barcelona? Do the maths

Travellers from the Americas or Asia often land at Barajas or El Prat and then take a short flight to Bilbao. That works well when the connection is comfortable, but add up the real time: the layover, a possible delay on the first flight, collecting bags again and then another hour and a half by road. If the connection is long or unreliable, heading straight off by road from your arrival airport can be just as quick and far calmer. Business travellers who want to work on the way can book our Executive service, which has wifi on board.

Frequently asked questions

Does Logroño have its own airport?+

Not one with useful commercial services. Most visitors fly into Bilbao, about 135 km and 1 h 30 away, or into Vitoria, Pamplona, Zaragoza or Madrid depending on their route.

Which airport is closest to La Rioja?+

Vitoria and Pamplona are the nearest, both about an hour from Logroño, but Bilbao offers far more flights and is the usual first choice.

Is there a direct transfer from Bilbao Airport to La Rioja?+

Yes. We run private transfers from Bilbao Airport to Logroño, Haro, Nájera, Laguardia and anywhere else in La Rioja, with your driver waiting in arrivals.

Is Zaragoza a good alternative to Bilbao?+
