Planning your day in Haro

How do you plan a Haro winery tour in the Barrio de la Estación?

Quick answer: in Haro the great century-old wineries sit side by side around the old railway station, so you only need the car to get there and back. From Logroño it’s about 45 km (around 40 minutes). With two or three visits booked and lunch in the old town, you have a full day.

What makes Haro special is how close together everything is: CVNE, López de Heredia, La Rioja Alta and Bodegas Bilbaínas were built next to the railway tracks between the late 19th and early 20th centuries so they could ship their wine by train, and houses such as Muga and Roda joined them later. Today that means that, once you’re there, you can walk from one winery to the next in a few minutes. Your driver drops you at the first door, stays nearby in the quarter and picks you up when you finish your last tasting or when you want to head up to the centre for lunch.

A typical full-day plan

Time of dayWhat you doYour driver’s role
Early morningDeparture from Logroño, Haro or your hotel; around 40 minutes if you’re coming from the capitalPick-up at your door and arrival in good time for the first visit
MorningTour and tasting at a winery in the Barrio de la Estación; a short walk to the secondWaits in the quarter, with no need to park or move the car
MiddayLunch in Haro’s old town, around the Plaza de la PazShort transfer from the quarter to the centre
AfternoonA third visit, a stroll around Haro or a hop over to Briones or San Vicente de la SonsierraRoute through Rioja Alta and return to your accommodation

Which Haro winery should you choose if you only have time for one?

If you’re after history and old underground cellars, any of the quarter’s founding houses will deliver. For those who want to see tradition and signature architecture together, CVNE is a good first stop; we cover it in our CVNE winery visit with a driver. To compare areas and styles before you book, take a look at our overview of winery visits with a driver in La Rioja. Remember to check opening times and availability on each winery’s official website.

What if you’re coming as a group or straight from the airport?

For seven people, the Rioja Group van lets the whole group arrive at the quarter together; the details are in our private group wine tour. If you land that same day, we can pick you up in Bilbao (about 100 km to Haro) and head straight to the wineries. And if you’d like to carry on to the villages of the area, link up with our Rioja Alta wine route.
