Valdezcaray ski transfer: getting to the ski resort

Updated 20267 min readBy Rioja Transfer

A Valdezcaray ski transfer from Logroño, Ezcaray, Santo Domingo, Haro or Bilbao and Vitoria airports: your gear on board, a fixed price and no driving up the mountain road.

Quick answer

The Valdezcaray transfer gets you to the slopes in around 1 h 10 from Logroño, about 20 minutes from Ezcaray or close to 1 h 50 from Bilbao airport. The driver picks you up with your skis or snowboard, waits or comes back for you at the agreed time, and you never have to fit snow chains or drive back tired.

Valdezcaray is La Rioja's ski resort, in the Sierra de la Demanda, above Ezcaray. A Valdezcaray ski transfer takes care of the most awkward parts of a day in the snow: driving up a mountain road, parking in high season, coming down on tired legs and, if there is snow on the road, dealing with chains. It is used by families staying in Logroño, groups of friends flying in for the weekend and skiers sleeping in Ezcaray or Santo Domingo who want to forget about the car.

When is the ski season at Valdezcaray?

The resort normally opens in winter, with the season concentrated between December and March, although the opening and closing dates depend on the snow each year. The slopes run roughly from 1,500 to just over 2,000 metres above sea level, with areas for beginners, a ski school and runs for experienced skiers. Before booking, check the snow report and lift status on the resort's official channels: the departure time we suggest will depend on them.

We take care of the transport, not lift passes, equipment hire or lessons; you arrange all of that directly with the resort or with the shops in Ezcaray. What we do is adapt the pick-up to your plan: heading up first thing to make the most of freshly groomed pistes, or leaving later if you are only skiing for half a day.

How does the Valdezcaray transfer work?

  1. Choose the option: a simple return trip (we drop you off and come back at a set time) or a driver at your disposal for the whole day.
  2. Tell us about your gear: number of people, pairs of skis or snowboards, boots, helmets and bags. With that information we allocate the vehicle.
  3. Confirm the departure time: we recommend one based on your starting point and the forecast. From Logroño, leaving at around 8:00 gets you on the slopes by mid-morning.
  4. On the day: we check road conditions before setting off. If the authorities require chains or close the road up, we let you know and find an alternative together.
  5. The return: the driver collects you from the resort car park at the agreed time; if you want to squeeze in one last run, just send a WhatsApp.

Checklist for a day at Valdezcaray

  • Lift pass bought or reserved as instructed by the resort.
  • Warm clothing in layers, gloves, goggles and sun cream.
  • Gear labelled with your name: it all looks very similar between skiers.
  • A change of dry clothes and comfortable shoes for the ride back in the vehicle.
  • A charged phone with the driver's WhatsApp saved in case you change the time.

Transfer, your own car or a hire car for the snow?

With your own car you have freedom, but also all the chores: carrying chains or suitable tyres, knowing how to fit them in the cold, finding a space in the car park on busy days and driving back when your body is begging for the sofa. A hire car also adds collection and return at the airport or in town, and it does not always come ready for snow. A transfer rolls all of that into a single booking: the driver knows the road up, adapts to the weather and you only have to think about skiing. For groups, splitting a fixed price per vehicle between several people also tends to work out reasonably compared with taking several cars.

If the non-skiers in your group would rather stay in Ezcaray for a stroll or some shopping, we can arrange two separate pick-ups on the same day and bring everyone together for lunch or the journey back.

Can I come skiing by plane or train?

Yes, and that is exactly when a transfer makes most sense. Bilbao airport is the usual gateway for international and domestic flights; we track your flight, wait for you in arrivals with a sign and can take you to your hotel in Ezcaray or straight to the slopes if you land early. You will find journey times in our airport transfers section. If you arrive by train in Logroño, which has Alvia, Intercity and regional services, we pick you up at the station with our Logroño train station transfer.

Where to stay for a snow weekend?

Ezcaray is the closest base, with hotels, rural cottages and good food after a day on the slopes; if you stay there, our private driver in Ezcaray also covers dinners and airport transfers. Santo Domingo de la Calzada, just over half an hour away, offers more beds and its Parador; see our private driver in Santo Domingo de la Calzada. And if you prefer the city, Logroño lets you go out for tapas at night and head up to the snow in the morning.

A day in the snow combines well with other winter plans in La Rioja, and a full mountain getaway, with village and sierra, from Ezcaray and Valdezcaray is easy to put together from Logroño. For days when you want the car at your disposal with no fixed timetable, there is also our hourly chauffeur service.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take from Logroño to Valdezcaray ski resort?

Around 1 h 10 for about 75 km, passing through Ezcaray on the final stretch. With snow or heavy traffic on the way up, it can take longer.

Do skis and snowboards fit in the vehicle?

Yes, as long as you tell us when booking how many of you there are and how much gear you are bringing. With that information we choose a saloon or the 7-seat van so everything travels safely.

Does the driver wait all day at the resort?

It is up to you. Most often we drop you off in the morning and come back at the agreed time, but we also offer a driver at your disposal throughout the day. Both options have a fixed price.

What happens if the road is closed because of snow?

We check road conditions before setting off. If the authorities close the road up or the resort does not open, we let you know as soon as possible and work out another date or plan with you.

Do you run transfers from Bilbao airport straight to Valdezcaray?

Yes. It takes close to 1 h 50. We track your flight, wait for you in arrivals with a sign and take you to the slopes or to your accommodation in Ezcaray.
