Rioja wine tour from Madrid

Updated 2026 7 min read By Rioja Transfer

Why a Rioja wine tour from Madrid works best as a weekend break, and how to organise it with a private driver.

Madrid is just over three hours from La Rioja: too far to get there and back in a day if you also want to enjoy the wineries at a relaxed pace. The way people who know the region well organise it – and the way we recommend – is as a weekend break, not a day trip.

How long does it take from Madrid to La Rioja?

The drive from Madrid to Logroño takes around 3 and a half hours by car, roughly 330 kilometres via the A-1 and the N-232 or AP-68. There and back adds up to more than 7 hours on the road alone, which leaves very little time to enjoy the wineries if you try to do it all in one day.

Why a weekend Rioja wine tour from Madrid works better

The most experienced wine tourism agencies running trips from Madrid all agree: the formula that works best is to arrive on a Friday or Saturday, spend one or two nights in La Rioja and head home at a relaxed pace. That way the journey stops being an obstacle and becomes the start of your break.

  • A weekend with one night: arrive on Saturday morning, a full day of wineries, a night in Logroño or Haro, and home on Sunday.
  • A weekend with two nights: lets you spend one day in Rioja Alta (Haro) and another in Rioja Alavesa (Laguardia), without rushing and without repeating wineries.

Transport sorted from start to finish

With a private driver from Madrid, the whole journey becomes simple: we pick you up at your home, hotel or Madrid-Barajas airport, take you straight to La Rioja, and during your stay the driver is on hand to take you between wineries, so nobody in the group has to skip the tasting. At the end of your break, we take you back to Madrid.

“Three and a half hours go a long way if you make them the start of the trip rather than an obstacle on the same day. The weekend is the format that really works from Madrid.”

What to book before you set off

To make the most of your weekend, it's best to have the wineries (booked in advance, especially in high season) and your accommodation confirmed before leaving Madrid. Everything else – getting between wineries, going out to dinner or back to the hotel – your driver can take care of, without you having to plan every journey.

Quick answer: from Madrid, a two-day break is the way to go: about 330 km and around 3 h 30 to Logroño, one night in La Rioja and three to five wineries spread across two areas. You can travel with us from Madrid-Barajas or from your home, or come by train and we'll pick you up at the station.

If you're landing at Barajas, you'll find all the details on our Madrid airport to Logroño transfer page; and if you're staying in the Haro area, see the Madrid-Barajas to Haro transfer. For the train option, take a look at our Logroño train station transfer.

A winery weekend, step by step

DayMorningAfternoon and evening
SaturdayEarly departure from Madrid; arrive in Haro mid-morning for a first visit in the Barrio de la Estación (the historic Station Quarter)Lunch, a second winery and check-in; dinner in Logroño or at the hotel
SundayRioja Alavesa: Laguardia, Elciego or Samaniego, with one or two visitsAn early lunch and the drive back to Madrid, arriving mid-afternoon or early evening

Starting Saturday in Haro works very well because it's on the natural route from the central plateau; we explain it on our Haro winery visit with a driver page. On Sunday, because it's closer to Logroño, Rioja Alavesa lets you make the most of the morning without delaying your return too much.

Where to stay to make the most of your trip?

Choosing the right hotel saves time on the road. Logroño is the most balanced base, with good access to every area and Calle Laurel, the famous tapas street, for dinner; Haro puts you within walking distance of the Barrio de la Estación; and Laguardia or Elciego place you right in the heart of Rioja Alavesa. Wherever you choose, we pick you up at the door: find out more on our hotel transfers in La Rioja page.

How it differs from a day trip

  • No need for a crack-of-dawn start or a late-night drive home on the motorway.
  • You can taste at every visit, because nobody in the group drives at any point.
  • Your purchases travel in the boot all the way to your home in Madrid, with no checking in boxes or lugging them onto the train.
  • The price is fixed per vehicle for the whole service, so it works out better value as a group.

What if you really only have one day?

It can be done, but with realistic expectations. With more than seven hours on the road there and back, the day is enough for a single area and, at most, two visits. In that case we suggest setting off very early, focusing on Haro's Barrio de la Estación, where the wineries are just a few steps from one another, and starting back mid-afternoon. The advantage of having a driver is that the journey home becomes rest time: you can sleep, work or talk about the wines without thinking about the motorway.

Company trips and incentives from Madrid

Rioja's wineries are a popular destination for teams leaving Madrid to celebrate the end of the year, hold an off-site meeting or entertain clients. For these trips we combine the return transfer with getting around during the stay, in premium electric saloons or the seven-seat van, and we invoice in the company's name. You'll find more information on our corporate transport page.

When to book

Harvest weekends, between September and October, and spring bank holiday weekends are the busiest times for both wineries and hotels. We recommend confirming your visits first on each winery's official website, then your accommodation and, lastly, your transport with us: with all the times on the table, we'll give you a fixed price in under an hour.

Combining La Rioja with the north

If your break from Madrid includes the coast, La Rioja fits in as the first or last stage. You can spend two nights in Logroño or Haro and then carry on to Donostia (San Sebastián), following in reverse the route we suggest in our Rioja wine tour from San Sebastián. We'll take you from one region to the other with your luggage and wine purchases in the boot.
