Rioja wine tour from San Sebastián
Find out how to plan a Rioja wine tour from San Sebastián: distance, journey times and how to do it in a single day with a private driver.

If you live in San Sebastián or are spending a few days on the Basque coast, La Rioja is closer than it seems: about two hours by car. That makes a Rioja wine tour from San Sebastian the perfect full-day excursion to the wineries, with no need to book a night in the region.
How long does it take from San Sebastián to La Rioja?
The journey from San Sebastián (Donostia) to Logroño takes around 2 hours via the AP-8 and AP-1 through Vitoria-Gasteiz, roughly 165-170 kilometres, according to the latest route calculations. It is a comfortable, well-signposted drive; the usual alternative is to go via Pamplona (A-15 and A-12).
Why do your Rioja wine tour from San Sebastián in a day, with a driver?
Two hours there and two hours back leave plenty of time to spend most of the day at the wineries if you set off early. The problem, as always on wine routes, is who drives. With a private driver from San Sebastián, the whole group can taste without limits: the driver picks you up from your accommodation in Donostia, takes you to the wineries you've booked in the Rioja Alavesa or Rioja Alta, waits during the visits and brings you back to the coast in the evening.
Which wineries to visit depending on your time
As you're coming from outside the region, it makes sense to focus the day on a single area rather than spreading yourself too thin:
- The Rioja Alavesa is the most logical choice when coming from the north: Laguardia and its wineries are on the way, without having to cross the whole region.
- Haro also works if you prefer the Barrio de la Estación (Station District) and its century-old wineries, although it adds a little more driving.
- With two wineries and lunch in between, the day is nicely full without feeling rushed.
"Two hours there, two hours back and a whole day of wineries in between. With a driver, San Sebastián and La Rioja are just one trip apart."
How to plan the day
Set off early, book your wineries in advance — in the Rioja Alavesa and Haro, places fill up quickly in high season — and plan your return for mid-afternoon or sunset. If the group wants to make more of it, you can always turn it into a weekend break with a night in Logroño or in one of the villages of the Rioja Alavesa.
Quick answer: you can do the Rioja wine route from San Sebastián in a day: it's around two hours to Logroño and a little less to Laguardia or Haro, depending on traffic. With an early start, there's time for two wineries and lunch. We pick you up from your accommodation in Donostia and bring you back to the coast in the evening.
Distances from Donostia to the wine areas
Coming from Gipuzkoa, there's no need to drive all the way down to Logroño to start tasting. The motorway takes you into Álava first, and from there the Rioja Alavesa and Haro come before the Riojan capital. These are the reference times we use when planning the day (approximate figures, without stops):
| Destination | Approximate time from San Sebastián | Why choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Laguardia and the Rioja Alavesa | around 1 h 45 - 2 h | The most direct area; a walled town and wineries with striking architecture |
| Haro (Barrio de la Estación) | around 1 h 45 - 2 h | Several century-old wineries side by side, within walking distance of each other |
| Logroño | about 2 h | Nearby wineries plus an afternoon of pintxos on Calle Laurel |
A typical day from San Sebastián to the wineries and back
- Early departure from your hotel or apartment in the Centro, Gros or Antiguo districts. Once the van or car is loaded, we head south.
- First visit mid-morning in the Rioja Alavesa. If architecture is your thing, the Ysios winery visit in Laguardia is one of the most requested by visitors coming from the coast.
- Lunch in Laguardia, Elciego or Haro, without watching the clock or your glass.
- Second winery in the afternoon. If you prefer the classic houses, we switch areas and you finish in Haro's Barrio de la Estación.
- Back to Donostia while the group relaxes, arriving in time for dinner in the Parte Vieja (Old Town) if you still have the appetite.
To choose wineries in the Álava area at your leisure, we recommend our Rioja Alavesa wineries with a driver page, where we group them by village. Visits are booked on each winery's official website; we adjust the departure time to your bookings.

| There and back in a day | With a night in La Rioja | |
|---|---|---|
| Driving | about 4 hours in total | spread over two days |

| Ideal for | Those already staying on the coast | Couples and groups who want dinner in Logroño or Laguardia |
If you choose to stay overnight in La Rioja, the driver can drop you at your hotel in the evening and pick you up the next day to continue the route and return to San Sebastián, or take you straight to the airport.
Flying home after the tour?
Many international visitors combine Donostia and La Rioja on the same trip. If your flight leaves from Biarritz, just across the border, we can finish the day at the airport; see our Biarritz airport to La Rioja transfer, around 2 h 30 from Logroño. Bilbao is the other usual option, a little over an hour from Haro. We work in Spanish and English, so the route works just as well for international groups staying on the coast.
All the areas, formats and wineries with their own page are brought together in winery visits with a driver in La Rioja.
Groups and hen or stag parties leaving from the coast
San Sebastián is a common starting point for groups of friends, hen and stag parties and company trips that already have their accommodation in the city. For up to seven people we use the Rioja Group van, with room for luggage and for any cases of wine you buy at the wineries; that way nobody has to drive back along the motorway after tasting. If there are more of you, get in touch: the 16-seat minibus is coming soon. We explain how it works in our private group wine tour.
Tips for a perfect day
- Book the wineries before the transport. Once the visit times are confirmed, we work out when to leave Donostia so you arrive neither late nor too early.
- Avoid back-to-back guided tours. With four hours on the road in a day, two visits and a relaxed lunch is the balance that works best.
- Check the traffic forecast in summer. On Fridays and Sundays in July and August, leaving the coast can take longer; we factor this in when suggesting your schedule.
- Bring a warm layer. Underground cellars and barrel rooms stay cool all year round.
Is your trip carrying on to Navarre? Pamplona is only an hour from Logroño, so you can end the route there instead of going back to the coast; we explain how in our Rioja wine tour from Pamplona.
