Rioja wine tour from Barcelona

Updated 2026 7 min read By Rioja Transfer

Why a Rioja wine tour from Barcelona works best as a weekend break, and when it makes sense to fly to Bilbao and use a private transfer.

Barcelona is more than four and a half hours from La Rioja – the longest journey of all the cities people usually plan a Rioja wine tour from. Going there and back in a day isn't realistic if you want to enjoy the wineries, so the option that really works is a weekend break.

Road trip from Barcelona through the Ebro valley towards La Rioja

How long does it take from Barcelona to La Rioja?

The drive from Barcelona to Logroño takes around 4 and a half hours by car, roughly 470 kilometres on the AP-2 and AP-68 motorways. It's the longest distance for this kind of trip, so it's best planned as a journey in its own right, not as a day trip.

Why it's best planned as a trip of several days

With around 9 hours on the road just for the outward and return journeys, trying to squeeze a winery visit into the same day leaves very little real time to enjoy it. The options that work best:

  • Fly to Bilbao and take a private transfer to La Rioja (around an hour and a half from the airport) – the quickest option if you don't want to drive for 9 hours.
  • A weekend by car or transfer from Barcelona, with one or two nights in La Rioja to make the journey worthwhile.

The most practical option for a Rioja wine tour from Barcelona: plane + transfer

For people setting off from Barcelona, it often makes more sense to fly to Bilbao and book a private transfer to La Rioja from there, which takes only around an hour and a half. You skip most of the road journey and arrive rested, ready to start your winery tour as soon as you land.

“From Barcelona, the question isn't how many wineries to visit in a day, but how to get there without losing the whole weekend on the road. Plane + transfer is usually the best answer.”

How we make it work

If you fly to Bilbao, we pick you up at the airport and take you straight to your accommodation in La Rioja. If you'd rather come by car or coach from Barcelona, the driver meets you in Logroño or wherever you're staying and takes you between wineries throughout your stay, so nobody in the group has to miss out on the tasting.

Quick answer: from Barcelona, La Rioja is best planned as a two- or three-day break. By road it's about 470 km and around 4 h 30 to Logroño. The quickest option is usually to fly to Bilbao and cover the last leg with a driver, around 1 h 30; you can also come by train and we'll pick you up at the station.

A three-day long weekend from Barcelona

  • Day 1 · Arrival: a morning flight or train, pick-up and check-in. In the afternoon, a stroll around Logroño's old town and a dinner of pinchos (Spanish tapas).
  • Day 2 · Rioja Alavesa: Laguardia, Elciego and a winery with contemporary architecture. We guide you on our Rioja Alavesa wineries with a driver page.
  • Day 3 · Haro and home: a morning in the Barrio de la Estación (Haro's historic Station Quarter) and a transfer to the airport or station to head back to Barcelona in the afternoon.

With two nights the trip is worth the miles; with just one, we'd advise choosing a single area rather than trying to cover the whole region.

Travelling as a group

Hen and stag parties, anniversaries and trips with friends from Catalonia are usually groups of six or seven. The Rioja Group van takes the whole group and their luggage from the airport to the accommodation and then from winery to winery. We explain it on our private group wine tour page. The price is fixed per vehicle, so it's shared between everyone.

When is it most worth going?

The grape harvest, between September and October, is the most spectacular time, with the vineyards in full swing, but it's also when wineries and hotels are in highest demand. Spring brings mild temperatures and fewer people; winter, quieter and more personal visits. Either way, book your visits in advance on each winery's official website before buying your ticket.

What about stopping in Zaragoza?

The road between Barcelona and Logroño passes through Aragon, and Zaragoza lies roughly two-thirds of the way along. Some travellers take the chance to spend the night there or to catch a flight to its airport; from Zaragoza to Logroño it's around 1 h 45 by road, and we also cover that route with a driver – see our Zaragoza airport to Logroño transfer. It's a good way to split the journey in two if you're travelling with children or older people and don't want to sit for more than four hours at a stretch.
